Showcase Post #1

I am going to talk a bit about my second Wow and Wonder post.

The International Women's Conference - It has been said that something as small as the flutter of a butterfly can ultimately cause a typhoon round the world. The 7th International Women's Conference- “

Wow

The butterfly effect is defined as the “phenomenon whereby a minute localized change in a complex system can have large effects elsewhere” by the Oxford Languages dictionary. I have always found the idea of the butterfly effect to be fascinating, and over the years there have been a lot of games using this effect in their gameplays. But I find it more interesting to see how it is woven through our society. Things like Charma or other sorts of “you did this therefore this happens” scenarios are woven and taught throughout classrooms, and I believe are a very important part of teaching. A good example is from an article from Wittenborg University: “One dollar donated from your money can change your life or somebody else’s life in a more amplified manner than you think.” This quote can also reflect the way one interaction with someone can change the way someone else understands, learns or interacts with their PLE and PLO. Whether you believe in the butterfly effect or not the idea of doing one thing to achieve something else, or the idea that your actions have consequences is very real and something that is reflected in the idea of the butterfly effect.

Wonder

Our learning networks, and the way we learn change over time. I don’t learn the same way now as when I was in middle school. I am curious to know how much our PLE’s change over the years. We must change the people that we have around us as we change role models, friends, and coworkers. But how does that affect the way we learn and the way we internalize knowledge. In Mary’s third Wow and Wonder post she talks about how she uses the internet, and how it overlaps with her personal and working self. This will undoubtedly change over the years, and right now, some of the platforms that she uses will most likely change in her later life. I would be curious to know how my life will change as I get older and what things I do know that I won’t do in the future. One really good example of how we change in our past is how we learn as children vs how we learn as adults. Helene Wingens posted a website to give learning tips, but she also talks about how we learn as children saying “children learn how to “adult” by watching us,” which is something everyone has done when they were younger, but as we get older we rely more and more on our own experiences and google rather than learning from just watching other people. While this is a major difference I would be interested to see whether it is a positive difference or something that we could add to our PLE.

Free Internet access should be a basic human right, study says

Wow

I have never thought about the internet in terms of visitors and residents, but I like it a lot more. I have always found that simply classifying my grandparents as foreigners to the internet wasn’t really accurate, or saying that my dad is a foreigner just because he doesn’t know how to use Instagram. I like the way that using the term visitor can portray how much more someone might know about one topic over another.

Wonder

I do wonder what impact the idea of natives and immigrants of the internet has on the natives to the internet. As someone in my family who has always just been good at picking up computer things, and understands intuitively how to use things like phones, tablets, and computers, it has always been extremely stressful to figure things out that I can’t work out by a quick google search; because there are no easy ways to get help with a computer anymore.

Wow

I find the idea of the butterfly effect to be both incredible and terrifying. It’s a fascinating idea that I think is rooted in fact since all choices and actions have reactions. And while the idea that a butterfly can affect the weather is a little bit farfetched, it is perfectly realistic to think that something I do today could not only affect me, but other people around me potentially for days or months or even years; Hence why I also find the idea terrifying as well as fascinating.

Wonder

I really do wonder how much our learning environments affect how we learn as we get older. If I were to learn one way all my life (eg. in a classroom) and then later decide to learn on my own terms, without a teacher, I would be beyond lost. And yet people must have learned things like math or writing largely by themselves in the beginning. Would it make it easier for our minds to do things like learning languages if we were more accustomed to teaching ourselves and have teachers and professors be more of a guide, like the way online learning is now?

To me, a PLN is something that I find a very interesting concept. I find it interesting how we connect with people at different levels and how those levels affect how our final products are completed. I am interested to see how much of an effect our PLN has on us since a PLN was described as having connections with trusted individuals. I have always been someone with limited connections, preferring to have a few meaningful ones rather than many people who I don’t know as well. But it surprised me when I started to think about how many people I actually have had in my PLN over my life!

Wonder

I am curious about the relationship between a PLN and a PLE. A PLN must play a very large role in developing a PLE, but as someone who is surrounded by a lot of people who don’t learn the same way I do, I wonder how that could affect the way I learn. Do the people in the PLN affect your PLE or is it the other way around with your PLE affecting the people that you connect with?
